Prior to his appointment, Dr Mwirigi Kiula served as director of ICT & innovation at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH)
Dr Mwirigi Kiula has been appointed deputy vice chancellor for finance at St Paul’s University.
Mwirigi brings to the role over 20 years of experience in higher education leadership, public sector innovation, ICT strategy and corporate governance. His career spans key positions in both academia and the healthcare sector, with a history of institutional transformation and financial stewardship.
Prior to his appointment, Mwirigi served as director of ICT and innovation at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH), where he led the hospital’s digital transformation agenda. His work focused on improving system stability, operational efficiency and data visibility, while driving innovation to enhance the overall patient experience. Earlier, he held positions as deputy director of ICT and innovations and chief information officer at KUTRRH, overseeing enterprise ICT infrastructure and digital health systems.
Mwirigi is currently a council member at KCA University, where he contributes to the university’s strategic governance and institutional growth. He also serves as a trustee of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme.
His academic leadership journey began at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where he held multiple leadership roles over a 15-year period. These included ICT director, lecturer in digital transformation and deputy director of the Nairobi Industrial and Technology Park. During his time at JKUAT, he led the setup of the local device assembly line under Kenya’s Digital Literacy Programme, launching the TAIFA Electronics Brand, and supported the incubation of GOIP Limited, a startup focused on digital business-client experience platforms.
He holds a PhD in IT from JKUAT, where he also earned an MSc in information systems and a BSc in computer science. In addition to his academic qualifications, Mwirigi has completed executive training in corporate governance, pension fund management and strategic leadership.
