Tom Mboya Opiyo is the director of information systems at Sanku.
He is responsible for guiding Sanku’s technology direction, ensuring alignment between information systems and organisational goals while supporting scalable and sustainable impact.
Prior to this role, Tom served as technology lead for East Africa at Unilever. He worked with business teams and global IT stakeholders to drive digital transformation, implement innovation programmes and strengthen cybersecurity frameworks across the region.
Earlier, Tom held the role of chief digital transformation officer at Mount Meru Group, where he led the design and implementation of digital transformation initiatives, focusing on automation, process improvement and building a digital culture within the organisation.
He served as head of ICT and chief information officer at Unga Holdings, where he led IT strategy across East Africa. He oversaw infrastructure, enterprise applications and cybersecurity, and implemented key initiatives including cloud-based collaboration tools, SAP systems and resilience frameworks that supported business continuity and operational efficiency. He also established an SAP centre of excellence and drove process improvements using Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen methodologies.
Tom previously worked at Kenya Airways, where he held roles as continuous improvement lead and manager of business systems implementation.
He also served as head of ICT at SonySugar Company, where he developed ICT strategy, strengthened infrastructure resilience and implemented cybersecurity frameworks aligned to international standards.
Tom began his career at Chevron (Caltex) Kenya, where he worked as a programmer, systems administrator and analyst, supporting enterprise systems and infrastructure across multiple locations and contributing to SAP implementation projects across the region. Earlier roles include systems administrator and analyst at Coast Hauliers and project manager at Lisco Software.
