Richard Ssenono is the head of the Information Services Department and chief information officer at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), College of Health Sciences, Makerere University.
He began his professional journey in 2010 as an intern with the Parliamentary Records Management Services in Uganda before joining the Infectious Diseases Institute as an assistant librarian in 2011. He went on to serve as library and knowledge manager in 2014, deputy head of the Information Services Department in 2015, and was appointed to his current role in 2020. Alongside overseeing IT infrastructure, library and knowledge management services, software development, data management, and Geographic Information Systems for over 100 projects, he is leading IDI’s digital transformation roadmap and advancing its data science capabilities.
Richard holds a Bachelor’s in library and information Science from Makerere University, a postgraduate diploma in information technology from Amity University in India, and an MSc in information technology from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He is currently pursuing a PhD in computing and information sciences at Makerere University, focusing on digital inclusion and information access. His certifications include Project Management Professional (PMP), TOGAF practitioner, ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer, Data Privacy & Protection (GDPR & HIPAA compliance), and IT service management, among others.
