Alex Siboe Wekunda is the chief information officer at Stanbic Bank Kenya.
He began his journey in the early 2000s in the telecommunications sector, holding roles at ZTE Corporation, Huawei Technologies, and the Communications Authority of Kenya. In 2007, he joined Safaricom, where he played a pivotal role in launching 3G services, introducing BlackBerry to the Kenyan market.
In 2014, Alex moved to Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Group, where he spearheaded the rollout of the KCB Innovation Lab, and oversaw the core banking transformation. In 2018, as head of fintech, he guided the migration from KCB M‑PESA to Vooma, achieving exponential growth in mobile lending and digital transactions. He later served as head of technology strategy and banking systems operations before taking on the role of chief operations officer at 4G Capital.
In 2022, Alex joined Telkom Kenya as director of technology networks, delivering rapid 4G expansion, enhancing network performance, and introducing advanced infrastructure‑sharing frameworks. He was appointed to his current role at Stanbic Bank Kenya in 2023.
Alex holds a BSc in electrical and electronic engineering and an MBA, both from the University of Nairobi. He has also completed executive programmes at Stanford University, Deloitte, and Strathmore University, and is certified in project management, business analysis, and technology leadership.
